It’s that time of the year in Cary again. Time for us at the Town to ask YOU for your knowledge, experience, guidance and passion to continue to keep Cary as an amazing place to live, work and play. Yes, it’s that time when we accept applications for you to participate on one of our seven volunteer boards, committees and commissions.

Why Volunteer?

These boards are an incredibly valuable resource for the Town. And, as a council member, I have personally found great value in the recommendations provided by our citizen volunteers. From feedback received from the Planning and Zoning Board, to the incredible report put out by the Environmental Advisory Board’s Shale Gas Task Force, and also input from folks on the Public Arts Board and Parks and Rec. They are all key to what makes Cary such a great place to live.

But, it’s not just about your feedback – it’s about getting involved and truly making a difference. If you have a passion around any of these areas, please apply. Not only will you get an opportunity to help the town by providing your insights and thoughts, but also you will meet like-minded folks, interested in these topics and maybe even have FUN!

And, volunteering is good for you. More and more research shows that volunteering improves your health, happiness and well-being among those folks who do it.

Details, I Need details

Each of the board and commissions are unique in size, meeting schedule, and their specific functions. Some of the boards also have subcommittees, such as the “Greenway Committee” as part of the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Advisory Board, that you may also want to investigate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time does it take?
It depends on the board and commission. Some of them have monthly meetings of just an hour or two, with some pre-work required (reading or research), others can require more time and effort, perhaps a visit to a potential development location, etc.

Do I need any special skills?
Nope. What we need is your passion, experience, knowledge and love of Cary.

What opportunities are available for teens?
Ahhh, that’s a great question. We have an organization that is specifically geared for teens – the Cary Teen Council. It is a volunteer organization made up of teens from a variety of schools in Cary and surrounding areas! The mission of the Cary Teen Council is to empower teens with the core values of leadership, accountability, and a heart for service. They provide volunteer and leadership opportunities, establish high standards for behavior, and promote teens to effectively communicate while managing their time and volunteer profiles. We even have some teens from the Teen Council serving on our regular boards and commissions!

Teens participating in this organization have the opportunity to get involved in programs and events that focus on social/recreational, community awareness/service, educational, leadership/teamwork and
fundraising/recruitment. This last year we had more than 730+ teens participating!

Have you ever sat there and said,

Why don’t they put a park by my house?

Wonder what they’re building over there…

I wish we would have bigger recycling bins…

I want a walkable Town…

Why don’t we have a YouTube channel?

I wish Cary would….

If so, then your town needs YOU!

It’s that time of year, when we at the Town of Cary ask citizens to step up and help continue to make Cary the best Town in North Carolina. Or, what we call, applying for a Town of Cary board or commission.

Board? Commission?

The Town of Cary boards and commissions are just one way that the Town Council and staff get direct citizen input and guidance on issues and opportunities facing the Town. Our volunteers (across the Town) are advocates for this great community, and their participation makes Cary a better place to live. By volunteering your precious time to participate in one of our boards and commissions, you give us the information that we need to make decisions.

We have seven boards and commissions right now at the Town and each of them provides a vital and important role to staff and Town Council. By participating on one of the boards, you are giving us your “citizen recommendations” for all types of activities, events, and policies throughout the town, on issues that impact our entire community. Whether you provide input relying on a unique skill or set of experiences, or based on your personal interests – your active involvement makes Cary a better community.

What will you do if appointed?

Each of the boards and commissions has a set of guidelines and focus areas. Although some of the boards are looking for specific skills for some roles, the basic requirement is your active participation.

Each board has a set meeting schedule and you are asked to attend these meetings in person.

Different boards/commissions have various work plans, time committments and schedules.

 Some “homework” may be involved.

Your input and feedback is key to continuing our great quality of life. You’ll develop new relationships, share your concerns, opinions, and help us solve problems, and you might even have fun!

Apply

The following boards and commissions will have openings this year:

Environmental Advisory Board – 3 positions

Please review the Board and Commissions guidelines before applying, to ensure you don’t have any conflicts of interests associated with the board for which you would apply.

Applications must be received by June 30, 2012.

Play a part

Pick a board or commission that has a mission that is near and dear to your heart or perhaps one of your passions. From the Environmental Advisory Board, to the the Information Service Advisory Board, to Parks and Recreation – there are many to choose from. YOU are what’s best about this town that we live in, and we need your help.

I look forward to seeing your application, and thanks for helping to keep Cary great!

It’s happened at the Town already. It was just a matter of time. I’m the “techy” one, so I’m used to it. Yes, I’m now “technical support.” I’ve now taught 3 folks (who shall remain nameless) how to use their smartphones. How to turn them on and off, silence them, and how to load apps. (C’mon Verizon and AT&T – show people the basics before you let them leave the store!) But I digress.

I should first say that I love doing that. It’s always been my passion to help people use technology to improve their lives – whether as a Product Manager or Homeland Security Advisor at Cisco, teaching internet safety classes or training teachers to use technology in the classroom as a way to excite and engage students.

Confessions and Solutions

My iPhone

And, I have a confession. I have an addiction to the toys. It’s true. I have 2 smartphones, 2 Macs, a desktop PC, an iPad, and other gadgets. I just love the stuff. And, I don’t think I’m alone. Wherever you go in Cary, you can find people on their devices. Folks texting, tweeting, or updating their Facebook status. They’re “checking in” or using Foursquare, sharing tips and restaurant reviews, shopping and navigating. They’re Pinterest-ing (an online bulletin board), posting photos on Flickr, and stumble-upon new information. (If you didn’t get any of those references, click on the links to learn more.)

So, we use these tools in our day-to-day lives – so why can’t we use them to improve our engagement with at the town, and with our citizens? I think we can. Scratch that, I know we can.

Town of Cary Webpage from 2004

Many years ago, a citizen (now Mayor Weinbrecht) joined and led the Information Services Advisory Board. It’s an advisory board to council on technology and communications used by the town. That board, under his leadership, did some incredibly innovative (at that time) things. They worked closely with staff and council to recommend website updates & communication ideas, with a goal of opening up more of our processes to the web (such as online permitting, and posting meetings over video.) Much of this work has garnered awards for the town back in 2003.

But, in my opinion, we haven’t continued that progress. We once called ourselves the “Technology Town of NC” – but that isn’t where we are today. But it COULD be.

My Vision

A town that leverages our fantastic infrastructure to deliver “just in time” information to it’s Citizens. Using Social Media (like the town’s Twitter feeds and Facebook pages) to outreach to citizens – posting park and field closings (no more calling the phone and waiting for the answering machine.)

Raleigh's SeeClickFix

Enabling SeeClickFix – (here’s Raleigh’s version) a mobile app that empowers citizens to assist the town in identifying non-emergency issues such as potholes, broken traffic lights or clogged sewers. Citizens will be able to help us locate and identify issues, and be part of the solution to help improve our community.

Streaming Town Council and other meetings for those of us without access to CaryTV 11. A growing number of us have DirectTV, without access to our cable access channel. Let’s create channels of information, in small nuggets making it easy and quick to digest the content.

Mashups of GoogleMaps with greenways, bike paths and other “citizen created” layers. (Take a look at one from New York City.)

Teach Cyber Security and Cyber Safety to our citizens. Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the U.S. and we should find ways to teach our citizens how to stay protected while they’re connected. (Full disclosure: I have a board seat on the National Cyber Security Alliance – www.staysafeonline.org. )

Citizen outreach and reducing paper – using online surveys and portals/blogs to more quickly engage with citizens, use more online communications to reduce mail and postcard printing costs, and collaborate with citizens.

What’s Next?

So many of these capabilities and applications are not only low or no cost – but some may save us money down the road, while also increasing citizen engagement and satisfaction. Plus, there’s always the cool factor.

Quality of Life – we hear it all the time, and it’s sometimes used by many of us as the reason we live here in Cary. I think we will admit that we’ve got a “high quality of life” here in Cary. What we sometimes DON’T think about is our “life quality.” With more than 25% of our population being baby boomers, it’s something that more and more of us think about. (Yes, I’m a baby boomer.) Our life quality is important; the ability to maintain, regain or improve our abilities or skills, to make a contribution, to be present for our family and to enjoy life. Sometimes we are born with disabilities, or come by them through an accident, or daily challenges. And, still, we go on. As do the the folks from the Cary Mayor’s Task Force on Disabilities.

I got a chance to meet with the passionate members of the Cary Mayor’s Task Force on Disabilities on Wednesday. They have been meeting for years to advocate and create awareness on the Life Quality issues for folks in Cary that have disability issues.

Who are they?

I learned so much at this meeting. FIrst, they were formed in January 2006, when a small group of Cary citizens came together to address issues and challenges to make Cary a better place for our citizens with disability. They are an eclectic and passionate group, coming from all walks of life and organizations – from the members of the Eastern NC Multiple Sclerosis Society, NC Department of Vocational Rehabilitations, to folks who work with people with brain injuries.

(Full disclosure: I am a trustee on the Eastern North Carolina MS Society, as well.)

Getting involved

Task Force on Facebook

They get involved when and where they see a need. From reviewing the Town of Cary Master Parks and Recs plan (from the lens of folks with disabilities), to creating a Webpage and Facebook page that provides information and resources, to advocating for additional disabled parking centers and wheelchairs at local businesses.

I spoke with them about their mission, what their accomplishments have been, and how they see Cary in supporting their “life quality” issues. They would like to be even more involved, and have so much to offer. I think that’s a great idea, and will explore what that might look like with my other council members, and Town staff.

Learn more

If you would like to join them, and learn more, they meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center, and their meeting is open to anyone.
